This change was approved by the FDA in June 2024; manufacturers are expected to begin shipping vaccine in late August/early September 2024. Updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccine is expected to be available at your local Lewis Drug pharmacy mid-September 2024. Do I need a booster dose?

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older in the United States for the prevention of COVID-19 (CDC updated recommendations in June 2024). There is currently no FDA-approved or FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine for children younger than age 6 months. CDC recommends that people stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccination.

There is no preferential recommendation for the use of any one COVID-19 vaccine over another when more than one recommended and age-appropriate vaccine is available.

People ages 65 years and older should receive one dose of 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine as soon as available. A recommendation made by the CDC in October 2024 has updated the COVID-19 recommendations for those 65 years and older to receive an additional dose 6 months from their initial dose of 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine. (example: An initial dose of COVID-19 vaccine was received by a 65 year old in late September 2024, the additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine should be administered in March 2025)

The COVID-19 vaccination schedule for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised has been updated for the 2024-2025 vaccine; these individuals may receive an additional dose of the updated 2024-2025 formula at least 8 weeks after their initial 2024-2025 dose. CDC recommendations from October 2024 have been updated for immunocompromised individuals; these individuals may have more than 2 doses of vaccine if felt warranted by a healthcare professional (consideration of disease, travel, immunocompromised status, etc).
